ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This image features in Santu Mofokeng’s critically acclaimed Rumours: The Bloemhof Portfolio. Produced between 1988 to 1994, this series of ‘photo stories’ reveal the photographer’s humanist approach to documenting South African communities during that period.

In 1988, Mofokeng joined the staff of the African Studies Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand as a documentary photographer and researcher. In this position, he began to record the lives of tenant labourers in the township of Bloemhof, an agricultural town in the North West Province. Over the next several years, Mofokeng amassed what could be considered the core of his body of work.

In contrast to the typical images of violence and poverty from apartheid South Africa that proliferated in global media in the 1980s, Mofokong instead, sensitively portrays people at leisure in their homes, dancing in shebeen bars, or playing games in the street.

These nuanced, slowed-down images, like Concert at Sewefontein, Bloemhof, resist the sensational and provide an intimate vision of people. Here he renders ordinary lives with exceptional attention to the context of land and home.

Highly distilled, yet immersive, the hazy black-and-white images are poetically surreal, haunting and spiritual.

Santo Mofokeng’s photographs currently feature in Beyond the Binary: Santu Mofokeng and David Goldblatt at The Walther Collection, Neu-Ulm, Everybody Talks About the Weather at Fondazione Prada in Venice, A World in Common: Contemporary African Photography at Tate Modern, London and in choreographies of the impossible for the 35th Bienal de São Paulo in São Paulo.

A freelance photojournalist and member of the Afrapix Collective in the 1980s, Mofokeng won the Ernest Cole Scholarship to study at the International Centre of Photography in New York in 1991.

Mentored by David Goldblatt during the 1980s and 1990s, Mofokeng’s photographs formed part of major exhibitions at various international institutions including Appropriated Landscapes at the The Walther Collection, Neu-Ulm in 2011 and The Rise and Fall of Apartheid: Photography and the Bureaucracy of Everyday Life at the International Center of Photography, New York in 2012. His first retrospective, Chasing Shadows: Thirty Years of Photographic Essays, opened in 2011 at the Jeu de Paume, Paris, and travelled to Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, and South Africa.

Mofokeng represented Germany at the 2013 Venice Biennale and was the inaugural recipient of the Biennial Honour, established by Fondazione Fotografia Modena and Sky Arte HD to recognise a living photographer of any nationality, whose artistic research has made a significant contribution. Coinciding with the award, the Fondazione Fotografia Modena presented his solo exhibition Santu Mofokeng. A Silent Solitude, curated by Simon Njami at the Modena Foro Boario, Italy, in 2016.

Santu Mofokeng was honoured with an Honorary Doctorate from Wits University in 2016.

Logistics

While we endeavour to assist our Clients as much as possible, we require artwork(s) to be delivered and/or collected from our premises by the Client. In instances where a Client is unable to deliver or collect artwork(s), Aspire staff is available to assist in this process by outsourcing the services to one of our preferred Service Providers. The cost for this will be for the Client’s account, with an additional Handling Fee of 15% charged on top of the Service Provider’s invoice.

Aspire Art provides inter-company transfer services for its Clients between Johannesburg and Cape Town branches. These are based on the size of the artwork(s), and charged as follows:

Small (≤60x90x10 cm): R480

Medium (≤90x120x15 cm): R960

Large (≤120x150x20 cm): R1,440

Over-size: Special quote

 

Should artwork(s) be collected or delivered to/from Clients by Aspire Art directly, the following charges will apply:

Collection/delivery ≤20km: R400

Collection/delivery 20km>R800≤50km

Collection/delivery >50km: Special quote

 

Packaging

A flat fee of R100 will be added to the invoice for packaging of unframed works on paper.

 


International Collectors Shipping Package

For collectors based outside South Africa who purchase regularly from Aspire Art’s auctions in South Africa, it does not make sense to ship artworks individually or per auction and pay shipping every time you buy another work. Consequently, we have developed a special collectors’ shipping package to assist in reducing shipping costs and the constant demands of logistics arrangements.

For buyers from outside South Africa, we will keep the artworks you have purchased in storage during the year and then ship all the works you have acquired during the year together, so the shipping costs are reduced. At the end of the annual period, we will source various quotes to get you the best price, and ship all your artworks to your desired address at once.

Aspire Art will arrange suitable storage during, and cost-effective shipping at the end, of the annual period.

 


Collections

Collections are by appointment, with 24-hours’ notice

Clients are requested to contact the relevant office and inform Aspire Art of which artwork(s) they would like to collect, and allow a 24-hour window for Aspire Art’s logistics department to retrieve the artwork(s) and prepare them for collection.

 


Handling Fee

Aspire Art charges a 15% Handling Fee on all Logistics, Framing, Restoration and Conservation arranged by Aspire.
