ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Passage (2017), was originally commissioned by the South African Department of Arts and Culture for the South African Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017. The project consists of a three-channel video projection and photographic series that offers a contemporary reflection on slavery’s dismemberment of African identity and its enduring erasure of personal histories. In Setswana, the experience of life is referred to as a ‘passage’. The Setswana word for life, botshelo, means ‘to cross over’. As such, all human beings are referred to as bafeti (‘voyagers’), a word that points to the fact that the experience of life is transient; it has a beginning and an end, as with any voyage.
This work presents one of the three characters in the series – a woman wrapped in a Basotho blanket. Positioned within the boat's curved structure, her gaze is fixed. She travels with only a single possession. She lies still, her eyes tracing the expanse of the sky above, conveying a sense of both struggle and acceptance. Gradually, a puddle forms beneath her, foreshadowing the boat's eventual submersion as it fills with water. The rhythmic movement of the water, symbolizing both vitality and peril, reflects the countless individuals who have traversed Africa's shores, whether in trade, as cargo, or as transient souls unbound by national borders.

International Collectors Shipping Package
For collectors based outside South Africa who purchase regularly from Aspire Art’s auctions in South Africa, it does not make sense to ship artworks individually or per auction and pay shipping every time you buy another work. Consequently, we have developed a special collectors’ shipping package to assist in reducing shipping costs and the constant demands of logistics arrangements.
For buyers from outside South Africa, we will keep the artworks you have purchased in storage during the year and then ship all the works you have acquired during the year together, so the shipping costs are reduced. At the end of the annual period, we will source various quotes to get you the best price, and ship all your artworks to your desired address at once.
Aspire Art will arrange suitable storage during, and cost-effective shipping at the end, of the annual period.
