Installation view: Walter Battiss, Spirit of Africa, c.1960
Created during a pivotal moment in Battiss’ career, Spirit of Africa reflects an important period in the late 1950s and early 1960s when the artist turned decisively toward ambitious, large-scale compositions. This phase includes landmark projects such as The Sanctuary mural (1958–59) for the former Transvaal Administration Building in Pretoria and African Paradise (c.1960), affirming his commitment to monumental expression.
An unmissable statement piece, the work was privately commissioned in the 1960s and embodies the energy, symbolism and expansive vision that define this era. Drawing on ancient visual languages and modern expression, Spirit of Africa celebrates the vitality of the African landscape and its people through rhythmic forms and vivid colour, all beautifully rendered in thick impasto.
A powerful and immersive composition, it stands as a tribute to Walter Battiss’ enduring and deep admiration for Africa’s cultural spirit.
The work will be unveiled on Thursday evening, 7 May at 6pm in the Atrium of the Trumpet Building as part of Keyes Art Night in Johannesburg.
