Summer Collection: Timed Online Auction

Aspire Art Auctions proudly presents the Summer Collection, a Timed Online auction taking place from 5 – 15 October. Celebrating the summer season with all things new, now and hot, the online-only sale offers a fresh range of modern and contemporary artworks for easy collecting.

The collection features artworks in various mediums by some of the leading and most sought-after artists from the early modern period to those practicing locally and internationally today. Artists represented include; Jake Aikman, Zander Blom, Norman Catherine, Kudzanai Chiurai, Peter Clarke, Marlene Dumas, Dumile Feni, David Goldblatt, Georgina Gratrix, Robert Hodgins, William Kentridge and Sydney Kumalo alongside Lawrence Lemaoana, Esther Mahlangu, Gerard Marx, John Muafangejo, Brett Murray, Sam Nhlengethwa, JH Pierneef, Stanley Pinker, Athi-Patra Ruga, Cecil Skotnes, Ruby Swinney and Diane Victor amongst others.

An exciting highlight is the uniquely curated selection of works by the much celebrated artist Walter Battiss spanning his prolific oeuvre. Included is a charming oil painting of a market scene in Mombasa from the 1960s – reminiscent of his extensive travels to the far off parts of Southern and East Africa – alongside a variety of rare drawings and watercolours documenting his explorations and artistic studies. Anchoring the collection is a remarkable series of serigraphs from the 1970s onwards. A large part of these works were produced for his 1973 exhibition at Gallery 21 in Johannesburg. Having pioneered the silkscreen-print method in the 1950s, Battiss’ exhibition was the first one-man show of serigraphs in South Africa.

Also of significance are two iconic photographs by the legendary German-born South African photographer Jürgen Schadeberg who recently passed away. Schadeberg was known for his striking images of Drum celebrities and most notably of key socio-political moments in South African history, including the visually powerful photographs of Nelson Mandela at Robben Island prison and the protest events during the Defiance Campaign.

The auction includes two fundraising sections in support of local and emerging artists. Works donated by artists like Gordon Froud, Vivien Kohler and Asanda Kupa are offered on behalf of The Project Space (TPS) in Johannesburg. Established in 2016 by the late Ugandan born artist Benon Lutaaya, TPS is a non-profit cultural institution dedicated to the advancement of contemporary African art, with a special focus on empowering young women artists to work full-time.

Following Aspire’s successful partnership with The Lockdown Collection (TLC) in raising an impressive R2 million in April for the Vulnerable Artist Fund (VAP) which supported over 400 artists to date during the Covid-19 pandemic, the official TLC Commemorative Portfolio is now offered in further aid of VAP. Limited to only 25 editions, the portfolio is a collector’s piece that visually captures South Africa’s Covid-19 lockdown period through art. It includes prints of the original 25 works donated by 22 artists which include Penny Siopis, Diane Victor, Mongezi Ncaphayi, Colbert Mashile, Sam Nhlengethwa, Thenjiwe Nkosi and others as well as the official poster by William Kentridge.

The Summer Collection Timed Online auction offers art lovers and collectors the opportunity to acquire high-quality works at a range of price points. Bidding opens on Monday, 5 October at 8 am and will run until Thursday 15 October with lots beginning to close at 6 pm
