Aspire Art is honoured to offer a selection of artworks from the estate of the late Andrew da Conceicao.
Andrew da Conceicao was well-loved and deeply respected in the art community in South Africa and beyond. He was known for his warmth and generosity, big smile and huge hugs.
In 2003 he was a founding director of Stevenson, together with Michael Stevenson and Kathy Grundlingh. The trio set out to improve the status of African artists. Over the past 20 years, as the sector has grown exponentially, the pioneering gallery has cemented its position as an important space, showing provocative and thought-provoking artists to local and international audiences.
Andrew was influential in identifying and nurturing young artists and genuinely interested in emerging artists and initiatives. Enthusiastically following the progress of many young artists, Andrew always provided support to those he had worked with and let them know their work was appreciated. He approached his work with deep care and dedication and held a great reverence for artists’ skill, imagination and craftmanship. Remembered as always giving his time and experience, without limit, Andrew was passionate about translating an artist’s vision into something concrete. His care also extended to those in need – as part of Stevenson’s Social Fund committee, he arranged for support of the Pride Shelter Trust, the first formal refuge in Africa that provides short-term accommodation to the LGBTQI+ minority groups during emergency situations, amongst other organisations.

This collection includes artists who have exhibited extensively at Stevenson. Contemporary artist, Zander Blom’s Garage-ism Starter Pack is featured as well as two silver gelatin prints of images from the 1960s and 70s; Saturday afternoon in Sunward Park, Boksburg and A woman in her voorkamer, Aberdeen, Cape Province (Eastern Cape), by the much-celebrated, South African documentary photographer David Goldblatt, who exhibited with Stevenson in the early 2000s.

Also on offer are a wide variety of largely South African artists identified and collected by Andrew – both young and up-and-coming and established – working across various media and who exhibit with many different galleries locally and abroad. Highlights are two large-scale paintings by artists Marlise Keith and Mark Kannemeyer, a pencil portrait by Hentie van der Merwe, fabric works by Lawrence Lemaoana and Piere le Riche and an ink and watercolour on paper by Lyndi Sales.
This intimate auction brings 33 artworks – collected in private – to a wider collecting audience, to embrace, enjoy and celebrate a gallerist who made a remarkable contribution to South African art.
