10/09/2020 Live Auctions, Announcements
This unprecedented collaboration between retail market design experts and auction market art specialists will take the form of a curated auction in Johannesburg in November 2020. Collectors will enjoy access to a selection of top-quality furniture and design products from leading brands from Africa and the rest of the design world. By promoting design industries from Southern Africa, homegrown designers will have an increasing platform through which to showcase their work. Simultaneously, the development of the secondary market for fine furniture and design products will give collectors the added benefit of knowing that their investments will grow in value while in their care.
This collaboration will see TONIC curate a selection of top-quality design pieces – including furniture, lighting and decorative arts – from across a range of South African, African and international designers. Aspire will produce and manage the auction and its associated catalogue, preview and promotional events as well as marketing. Through combining forces, Aspire and TONIC are not only able to increase their offerings to existing clients, but also grant access to broader audiences and a more diversified group of collectors. Additionally, the merits of this collaboration will extend to all of the collectors and designers directly involved in this initiative. In a world in which the value of collaboration grows daily, this partnership reflects the ethos of the participating brands and is indicative of how businesses can work together within commercial fields for the greater good of the industry, particularly in the case of design emanating from Africa.
“Africa has such an abundance of creative talent, and we are excited to bring this offering to a broader and global audience”, comments Greg Gamble, Director at TONIC. “As contemporary fine art from Africa is increasingly coveted by a growing local and international community, our intention is to promote the fine contemporary design produced on this continent as well, alongside signature pieces from international designers”, says Ruarc Peffers, Managing Director of Aspire.
With the market for top-quality creative products steadily growing, this global trend is firmly endorsed by the buying habits of savvy collectors. Aspire X TONIC is well positioned to promote and develop this burgeoning field of collecting.
The inaugural iteration of this pioneering sale will take place on Thursday, 26 November in Johannesburg – Africa’s economic hub. Entries for the auction close on Friday 16 October. If you have something that fits the bill, please do not hesitate to contact us for a valuation and further information regarding this initiative.
Those interested can expect to see a diverse offering of top design at accessible price points for a variety of domestic and corporate settings. Brands to look out for include, amongst others, Afri Modern, Dokter and Misses, Mash T Design Studio, Pinda Furniture and The Urbanative.
We are currently sourcing consignments of fine design and select decorative arts and invite you to contact us to participate in this new initiative.
