In Essence

Selling Exhibition  |  5 to 29 February 2024  |  Cape Town

Aspire Art in Cape Town presents In Essence a selling exhibition on view until 29 February.

Bringing together a diverse collection of works by various artists, the exhibition delves into the very core of artistic expression. Here, the theme centres on the intrinsic qualities of the subject and materiality in art as it refers to the main idea, theme and inherent meaning of an artwork.

Art is a form of communication that engages one’s senses, both visually and through touch. The choice of medium is an intentional decision by artists. It profoundly influences the entire creative process and becomes an integral part of the artwork’s subject and narrative.

The essence of any artwork is located in its particular subject and materiality. The meaning is shaped by the artist’s creative and conceptual intentions, while the medium functions as the conduit for the artist’s vision, contributing to the depth, richness, and authenticity of the final artwork.

The exhibition showcases a selection of 20th Century and Contemporary South African and African works of art, revealing prevalent topics that artists on the continent have engaged with and depicted through the various materials, such as oil painting, paper assemblage, incised wood and photography, to fabric-based works and large weaved tapestries.

Featured artists include: George Pemba, Walter Battiss, Lucky Sibiya, Robert Hodgins, William Kentridge, David Goldblatt, Kay Hassan, Alf Kumalo and Steven Cohen alongside Athi-Patra Ruga, Kate Gottgens, Jake Aikman, Alexandra Karakashian and Nelson Makamo amongst others.
