Notes:

Visiting Turiya Magadlela’s studio is quite an experience. One is confronted with an avalanche of pantyhose, heaps and heaps of them, some entangled, in boxes, plastic bags, in different colours and deniers. Then you are led to a result and wonder about the creative process.

Turiya Magadlela artworks are made from strips of pantyhose stitched together, stretched, and adhered onto a canvas. In ‘ Khala, Color, Colour, Imibala’ with shades of blue, white, and grey; and ‘Amehlo wakho zinkanyezi ze Themba Lo kuphila’ and its shades of red interspersed with orange and black, you are looking at a contrasting colour combination carefully selected and collaged. A closer look reveals the randomly asymmetrical nature of the artwork, textural, and its tonal shifts.

Magadlela takes a formal woman's garment, a readymade, deconstructs it and assembles it again, to produce something tactile, rich with colour, and imbues it with visual pleasure, away from a woman's body.

To quote Magadlela ‘I make my work from my personal life experiences. I don’t make social or political commentary. Should my work seem or look political, that makes me happy. I always want to leave it open to the viewer’s interpretation, and I find that talking about a work you made or writing about it narrows down the meaning that it is supposed to have.’

She leaves it to you to bring your comprehension and frame of reference to her work.

– Text by Senior Art Specialist, Makgati Molebetsi

The Zulu title of the work translates to "Your eyes are the stars of the Hope of Life" from the "I will love you for all time" series.

This work was produced in the same year Turiya Magadlela was selected for the 16th Istanbul Biennial.

International Collectors Shipping Package

For collectors based outside South Africa who purchase regularly from Aspire Art’s auctions in South Africa, it does not make sense to ship artworks individually or per auction and pay shipping every time you buy another work. Consequently, we have developed a special collectors’ shipping package to assist in reducing shipping costs and the constant demands of logistics arrangements.

For buyers from outside South Africa, we will keep the artworks you have purchased in storage during the year and then ship all the works you have acquired during the year together, so the shipping costs are reduced. At the end of the annual period, we will source various quotes to get you the best price, and ship all your artworks to your desired address at once.

Aspire Art will arrange suitable storage during, and cost-effective shipping at the end, of the annual period.
