ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Lucignano captures a visual memento of a landscape view during the artist’s summer holiday in the quaint commune in Campania, Italy, with a few close friends from Johannesburg. Looking at this serene scene, it is difficult to pinpoint a time of day. One can imagine it in the morning light, stark and fresh, perhaps with the smell of Italian coffee and murmurs of friends as they awaken. Or perhaps the aroma of dinner being made, the sounds of laughter intermingling with the clinking of wine glasses. Another option would be that the artist was completely by himself in this moment. Although Kentridge’s thought process in this image is not clear, the artist did reflect on the landscape in that same year, writing that

[t]here are no points, geographical or moral, I am trying to illustrate. The drawings are empirical, naturalistic. But they are approached with some sense that the landscape, the veld itself holds within it things other than pure nature.[1]

Looking at the expert portrayals of landscapes and trees in inky lines that have been so typical of Kentridge’s oeuvre, one can only imagine what the artist might have been trying to convey in this textural memory, at the dawn of an immensely prestigious artistic practice.

International Collectors Shipping Package

For collectors based outside South Africa who purchase regularly from Aspire Art’s auctions in South Africa, it does not make sense to ship artworks individually or per auction and pay shipping every time you buy another work. Consequently, we have developed a special collectors’ shipping package to assist in reducing shipping costs and the constant demands of logistics arrangements.

For buyers from outside South Africa, we will keep the artworks you have purchased in storage during the year and then ship all the works you have acquired during the year together, so the shipping costs are reduced. At the end of the annual period, we will source various quotes to get you the best price, and ship all your artworks to your desired address at once.

Aspire Art will arrange suitable storage during, and cost-effective shipping at the end, of the annual period.
