Assembled by a private collector over several years, largely while living abroad, the collection reflects a connection to South Africa experienced at a distance. Becoming touchstones of home, the collection, shaped by an instinctive and personal approach, carries the atmosphere of remembered places. It reveals not only changing aesthetic movements, but different ways of seeing and recording the country itself, reflecting the social and political realities of their time, suggesting the role art can play in maintaining connection across distance and time.
 
Spanning modern and contemporary South African art, the collection brings together works that reflect the breadth and complexity of the country’s artistic history. Included are important works by Peter Clarke, Penny Siopis, Gladys Mgudlandlu, Ephraim Ngatane, Louis Maqhubela, and Vladimir Tretchikoff, among others.
